Kid Friendly Dirt
Hello Diggers!
Elizabeth here. As Dig This commences we arrive in spring at full force. For me this means seeds, plastic trowels, and kids. I will be your official garden nanny for all your plant and child needs!
As an intern three years ago, I realized my passion wasn't plants. What?! (Yeah, I said it.) I had more fun giving tours and hanging out with kids in the garden; it was only appropriate for me to go on to graduate school to round out my horticulture background with the education perspective I would need for public horticulture education. I have been working with kids ever since.
Have no fear if you are not a child and do not have a child; my goal is to bring all people to plants. As a young adult with limited gardening space I have a lot to learn. In my pursuit of plants I will encourage you along the way, four or forty because you're never the wrong age to get dirty and garden!
This summer's projects are off to a slow start due to finals but rest assured I will keep you in the loop. Currently, I have two long-term projects. I have been recruited to work with the Boys & Girls Club of Central Iowa on a community garden. I "teach" two afternoons a week. Right now it's more like hurry up and clean our plots so we don't get behind! If you are looking for advice on giving your kids their own garden plot, stay tuned.
My second project is a personal ambition. I finally have an apartment with a patio which means I get to try my hand at container gardening! I know there are existing container gardening blogs and experts but this is my chance to:
1) hold myself accountable for gardening and blogging, and
2) prove that a college student on a budget can garden in an apartment.
And I promise that if I screw up, you will hear about it!
I can't wait to get started but finals are calling so I must return. In the meantime, meet the rest of my Dig This friends and go dig something!
