Soil in the Sea- an Island Adventure
Fellow Diggers,
Greetings, from St. John!
Alright, I'm jumping the gun... 'Salutations, from Iowa' will have to suffice for now. As school draws to a close, it's time to get back to that brown stuff under our feet. It's time to get dirty! For me, this would normally mean heading home from school, and helping my mom with her garden as things start to warm up, as well as doing some landscaping work for the local plant nursery. But what's fun about doing what I've always done? Perhaps it's just the perceptions of my twenty-nothing self, but I need to get out! But where to go... Europe? Africa? Australia? It's all been done.
Maybe not all... recently, I was thrown a bone. A lucky break and some good words have landed me a summer in the sunny Virgin Islands. By another stroke of luck, it's the most virgin of them all (in my opinion), St. John! This particular island has some 66% of it's area covered in National Park. So basically, it has a lot of trees (cool, right?).
I can't give you 'the skinny' on an opportunity as big as this one, so you'll just have to check back! Ya dig? In the meantime, here's what our next fourteen weeks could look like. Spend 2 weeks exploring our local wooded area for spring wildflowers. Then, we can hop a short flight down to the island! We'll spend 6 weeks working with a high school, their students, and their land. Once we're done there, we'll get a little closer to the ocean, and get some dirt in the jungle over by Maho Bay.
Another thing- I'll be on the lookout for some (I feel no shame in saying) Hot n' Sexy plant models, to keep everyone...'thinking' about tropical horticulture! For now, it's time to put the finesse on some final exams. Here's to a dirty summer- one we can all walk away happy from. Don't forget to check back in a few weeks- and in the meantime, get out there and dig it!
