People, Plants, and Passion

By Kelly Norris   Fri, Apr 23, 2010

I guess I've never really thought about what a first blog post looks, sounds, or reads like.  Should it be august in its hospitality, inviting readers to join the community?  Should it begin in earnest with no regard to the timing or the nature of its beginning?  Or should it set a tone, chat a little, and leave the reader wanting just a bit more?  I have no idea, quite frankly.  I'm Kelly Norris, and this is a blog about how to change the world one plant, seed, and crumbly clod of dirt at a time.

For me, gardening is about three "p's" - people, plants, and passion, and probably in that order.  Gardening is first and foremost about people.  It's about us.  Even the loneliest, plant-collecting hermit gardens with a sense of humanity, the realization that the fruits of his labors touch others' lives passively without regard and actively when he cares to spread the love.  That's what we're going to do here - spread the love.  I'm having the most fun as a gardener when I can share my passion for cool plants, trippy botanical tidbits, and a little dirt-flavored sass.  Enough with the how-to networks and piece-by-piece recipes.  Forget the rules for a minute and pull up a chair for a little garden chat.  The garden shouldn't be a cumbersome space.

Gardening is secondly about plants, for me at least.  I like to think I've got a spot-on sense of style, but all those elements of art aside, my garden space is a canvas for my plant lust.  I plant profligately, stuffing and cramming, pulling and tossing until I find the right blend of plants that makes that garden livable in my eyes.  I want a garden that teems with life and that artfully jumps in color and blooms.  You don't need degrees and certifications to create a beautiful piece of art in your living space.  You just need some good plants and an appreciation for your own sense of style.

Thirdly, gardening is about passion, ever and always.  Sure, it has practical benefits like increasing property value, showing off your postage stamp to the rest of the neighborhood, and serving as the source of conversation, particularly if you like outrageous art (or pink flamingos) in the front yard.  Whatever your pleasure, do it with passion.  It's a hell of a lot more fun, and it feels right too.  My muscles aching, hands dirty, and sweat running down my face sounds just as awesome to me as strolling through a relaxing public garden lit by flickers of candlelight in a leisure suit on midsummer night's eve.  Gardening is both and all of those things.  It's stylish, chic, and trendy.  It's raw, honest, and human.

So come along for the fun.  We promise to be silly, informative, bright, clever, and everything in between.  Don't forget passionate too!  With your support we might just turn this dirty little idea into the next greatest gardening website.  But we've got a ton of weeds to pull before we get there, and weeders always love company.
