Tie that binds

By Elizabeth Childs   Tue, Jun 29, 2010

No matter what size, shape, or color, we all have a common bond- life.  Life happens to all of us whether we’re four or forty.  Every day is filled with challenges of our own accord but there is something to bind us all.  Gardening connects people without regard to our tragedies or triumphs in life.  With little experience or a professional approach, gardening can be done by anyone.

It is comforting to remember my childhood gardening experiences with my family while I work with the boys and girls in our community garden.  I feel honored to experience and influence a new generation of dirt lovers.  I hope, for the sake of connecting generations, I get the opportunity at some point during the growing season I am able to visit with the families to see how deep the passion moves through this project.

To know there are tasks that can be accomplished and enjoyed by all it is easy for me to accept a smile on the face of my young gardeners as a genuine reflection of the work I am doing. I feel more confident knowing I don’t have to present a complicated task to a young, but eager, audience whose primary interest some days is being outside of the classroom.  Hearing stories about home gardens, even when accompanied by an occasional groan, I picture a future where gardening is still alive, passed down the way it has been from times gone by.
